Investigating and busting dog-fighting rings is what police officer Julio Herendez lives to do. Defending the innocent and vulnerable from monsters makes his day. So when he meets Paine “BB” Addison, Julio finds himself wanting to save the abused young man from the cruel world he’s also been forced to survive. Paine exists in an environment where the weak and innocent are exploited for entertainment. The men who use him for their perverted pleasure and fight the dogs don’t care about the physical or emotional damage they inflict upon their victims, both animal and human. Paine lives from day to day, doing what he can to heal the wounds suffered by others, but unable to help or heal himself. When Julio and Paine meet, it triggers a chain of events that rocks both their worlds to the foundations. But can they also bring justice for the silent victims?

I really enjoyed this story from T.A. Chase. It had an interesting setting and premise, some interesting characters, and quite a bit of well-written action. Just as the story and characters start settling down, something else comes up threatening the happiness of the characters.

Julio Herendez is an undercover agent for the Humane Society. He's already broken up two dog-fighting rings and is about to bust open a third, except this one will be possibly be the largest ever infiltrated in the U.S. Its the evening before the bust that Julio discovers Paine "B.B." Addison, the nephew of the ring's leader, trying to smuggle a dog out before the dog is killed for not being able to fight anymore. Recognizing Paine as someone sympathetic to animals, and someone probably just as abused as the dogs, Julio helps Paine save the dog and sends Paine off to someplace safe so his abusive family can be busted.

And it all keeps piling up. What started out as a dog-fighting ring opens up into a meth laboratory and charges of child endangerment and prostitution. It's a fun read. Just as you're feeling settled down into the story, something else happens. What I particularly liked in this story is that it has a wide cast of characters and a lot of events happening, but it's all handled smoothly by T.A. Chase. Nothing is short-changed and you're never left wondering "but what about....?" With a complex tale, it's all tied together quite nicely. His writing style is engaging and smooth, and it's a very enjoyable read.

I have to say it's one of my more favorite tales from T.A. Chase. I enjoy his work, and this one was particularly fun to read. If you've liked other works from him, you'll like this one too and I recommend it.

This book is truly amazing! Not the usual style of Chase's books but truly wonderful. This is a true "white knight" story & I hope there is a Julio out there for all of us.
This is the best book by T.A. Chase that I've read so far. It made me cry (a lot) and laugh (a little) and think (hard). I was mentally and emotionally exhausted after reading this book, but I know that once I've let it settled down a little I will be picking it up once more to reread it. Paine and his cousins broke my heart, but thank goodness Julio was there to patch it up just like he did with them. I would love to read more about them and their future or even about Pedro and Santo's story. I strongly recommend this book to everyone, but just be sure to have a box of tissues close by cause you'll need them.
This novel could have been heartbreaking and horrific at the same time, but the author decided to put a "veil" a top of it, like to tune down a little the raw feelings.

Paine is a young man living a nightmare; dumped by his drugs addicted mother when he was only 2 days old in the hands of his uncle, Paine grew up in a nightmare his uncle started to pimp him to his "business" associates when he was only 12 years old and the nightmare is still on. Paine's uncle is managing an illegal dogs fighting circuit and he is not only prostituting Paine, but also his own two daughters, 16 and 14 years old. Nothing seems to break through the cloak of desperation around them, not until Jules, an undercover cop who falls in love not only with Paine, but also with the dogs Paine is trying to save.

Jules is like a knight in shining armor, even if he is in love with Paine, I really don't think he has an hidden agenda, he is not helping Paine with the hope Paine will forever grateful to him. Jules is really a good man, someone who wants to help without expecting anything in exchange.

As I said, horrific things happened and is happening to Paine and his cousins, but while the author decided to give you one glimpse in Paine's nightmare, when it's time for Paine and Jules to share intimate moment, it's like the author decided not to allow anyone inside that room. We know Paine and Jules managed to be intimate, but it's their private moment, like if, after all the public horror Paine had to go through, this time he has the right to be all alone with Jules.

There is no hiding the drama these young man and his cousins had to go through, but the undertone of the story is subdue, whispered more than shouted, a lot like the behaviour of Betsy, one of the girls, who is always present but almost silent, letting other imagining her drama, more than her telling it.
Got this one because it was free. That turned out to be its one redeeming quality. The plot was completely unrealistic, and the characters poorly developed. Reading this was not the best use of my time.
This is the 5th T.A. Chase Book I have read, and it is by far the worst.

1. Three horrifically abused characters, only one of which reacts in even a superficially realistic way.
2. A completely unrealistic backdrop of dog fighting, child prostitution, and physical abuse that conflates felony activity in ways that are frankly offensive.
3. Stilted dialogue (enough said) from characters who do not engage with each other or the reader.

There's just no complication in this story. Everyone is either completely noble or abused and now noble. The villains are so completely abusive that their own motivation to abuse isn't even evident.
Excellent book, very entertaining story. The drama with the dogs is sad, but portrayed well.
This book has less sex then I'm used to by this author but in no way did that mess with the book. In fact it might have saved it.

The storyline is one that I'm not sure many could tackle. Dog fighting in any form is just wrong and as a huge dog lover I am glad that the bad guys get it in the end.

This book is full of what humans do wrong. From hurting animals, to child abuse, and more. It's hard to handle in some ways and I think not everyone will like it.

I did. I think the author did a good job.
