In 1993, with college graduation in Sapporo behind her, determined twenty-two-year-old Eiko sets her sights on living and working in the expansive metropolis of Tokyo. Her dream of exciting, new adventures in the big city gives her the strength and courage to leave behind all that she knows and loves—the familiarity and beauty of Hokkaido, her caring parents, her fun-loving older brother, and close friends—for the unknown in Tokyo.
Somewhat inexperienced, Eiko could not have imagined the challenges awaiting her—setting up her living space, meeting new neighbors, managing her time, learning work culture, developing new friendships, and encountering different ideas.
However, it is an unexpected tragedy that drives her to rethink all of her family’s long-held traditions and beliefs. It is this soul-searching experience that challenges her to rethink the foundation of her being, and her purpose for living—the very core of her worldview. It is this testing that could bring life-changing results.
Will Eiko survive and thrive in her new life in Tokyo? Or, will the disappointments and stress lead her to escape back to the security of Sapporo? Sky Blue is the first book in the Sky Blue trilogy which follows Eiko’s personal story of courage, adventure, and faith.

When it is released, I will be buying the second book. I want to see what happens. Not only is this a good story, I learned a lot about the Japanese culture. It was interesting to see the Japanese perspective of life. The more I read, the more I realized that what at first seemed stilted was actually showing me the formality integral to the essence of Japanese life.I can see why Jesus should be attractive to the people, thought with the pressure of thousands of years of tradition weighing on a person, I can see how hard that can be. Thank you Karol for a good book, a good story, and teaching me something as well!Sky Blue (Sky Blue Trilogy Book 1)

Sky Blue Sky Blue Trilogy Book 1 edition by Karol Whaley Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Wonderful story. Well written and engaging. For being a faith based story it is not preachy, but sweetly tells about God's love for us. Loved the characters and how they're developed throughout the story. Looking forward to the next two books. Loved it!
Karol Whaley is an author on a mission. Sky Blue, the first in a trilogy set in 1990's Japan, is a gentle but educational and entertaining read. Her attention to detail makes readers feel "at home" in another land and another time. I look forward to the next two books in the series!
This book held my interest from beginning to end. The author's deep faith and many hands on experiences with Japanese friends over the years combined with her understanding of the culture make for a very authentic story. I recommend this to all those wanting an encouraging and uplifting read about God's love and faithfulness.
A delightful story of hope & the peace of God's love. Having lived in Japan for 3 years as a teenager, I could picture the open markets, taste the ramen & hear the polite reflections in the Japanese conversations. I also know the stigma a Japanese may confront when they decide to follow Christ. Karol paints an honest & real picture of how God pursues us, no matter who we are or where we live. A sweet story of love & new faith and how our relationship with God may not always be accepted even by our loved ones, but must be our priority. I look forward to reading Karol's other 2 books in this trilogy.
Sky Blue belongs squarely in the Christian genre. It's a gentle story carrying the Christian reader alongside the heroine as Eiko seeks meaning and purpose in life. We meet her family and friends while the author, Karol Whaley, provides a sampling of Japanese culture. This book clearly states the basics of the Christian faith several times throughout the story. Given the ease of reading and the vocabulary of Japanese words at the end, this reviewer believes it's a good book for young people who want to learn more about the Christian faith and would be interested in Japanese culture.
What a lovely story! As Eiko discovers what her life will look like in Tokyo, she encounters people and a faith that will change the trajectory of her adventure.
This is a book that is encouraging, relatable and at the same time dives into the uniqueness of Japanese culture in the 90's family relations, work expectations, etc.
The story is engaging and I enjoyed it "cover to cover" (I read it in the kindle app).
i'm looking forward to the other books in Whaley's series. Living in a seaport town, I am in contact with students and guests from around the world. Reading Sky Blue, I felt quite at home with the conversations and culture. The author's background and sense of detail add authenticity. Grace and decorum mark the Asian culture. The author captured it perfectly.
The theme of faith, although not overbearing, emerged naturally. Quite heart-warming to see how faith filled the void for the main character.
I'll be watching for the next installments, Karol.
